Indiana School For The Deaf

September is Deaf Awareness Month. Conner Prairie is honored to collaborate with the Indiana School for the Deaf and LUNA Language Services to embrace and celebrate Indiana's Deaf legacy.

William Willard was the first Deaf individual in our nation's past to establish a school, establishing the Indiana School for the Deaf, then known as the Willard School, in 1843. The Indiana School for the Deaf presently houses a historical library with 204 volumes and 18,000 pages of publications, comprising school newsletters, senior numbers, and yearbooks, rich in Deaf tradition. The Conner Prairie Team teamed with the Indiana Deaf heritage Museum to convey Willard's story and expand on the rich heritage of Indiana's Deaf community.

The Deaf Heritage Day will take place on September 23, 2023. Save the date!

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the summer of 2024. The Indiana School for the Deaf will re-locate to the College Avenue campus with the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
