2008 Varsity Volleyball

October 15: Lutheran Saints

In the season finale at Lutheran, the Lady Hoosiers were manhandled in every aspect of the game (10-25, 16-25, and 17-25).  The team has not been playing up to par the last 3 games and was left scratching their heads trying to find some answers.  Senior Ann White had her usual steady performance by racking up 16 kills and 5 digs.  Freshman Traci-Ann Hoglind had 11 assists and teammate Kate Fetzer added 3 aces.

October 14: Eastern Hancock

At ISD the Lady Hoosiers lost their final home game of the season against visiting Hancock (18-25, 19-25, 25-21, and 10-25).  After a lackadaisical start, the Hoosiers showed signs of life by winning the 3rd game.  Hancock regrouped and had a strong start in the 4th game to put away the Hoosiers.  Senior Ann White led the charge for ISD with 34 attacks, 15 kills and 10 digs.  Teammate Amanda Phillips added 4 kills.  This match was the final home stand for seniors Ann Whited, Amanda Phillips and Janna DiBiase for which their overall commitment, dedication, and contribution to the volleyball team will be sorely missed.

September 26-27: Spike-Out X @ Maryland

Invited Teams:

Indiana, CSD- Fremont, CSD - Riverside, Phoenix Day SD, New Mexico SD, Wisconsin SD, Texas SD,

Model Secondary SD, Arizona SD, Ohio SD, Minnesota

With the most teams ever competing at the Spike Out Tournament (12), the Lady Hoosiers volleyball team swept their pool play on Friday including a 2-0 thumping over heavily favored Maryland Orioles. The team finished 5-0 on the day to secure the number 1 seed for the playoffs.

In the semi-finals match on Saturday, Fremont who ousted them in the tournament last year challenged the team. The Hoosiers lost the first game but bounced back to win the match 2-1 and reached the finals.

The Lady Hoosiers had a date with Maryland in the championship game and had to face a hostile crowd in a packed gym. A minor error in our rotation, which was a major factor in the team’s sub par performance, had us fall to Maryland 0-2. ISD was approached by a lot of fans and other teams who were surprised how well the team has catapulted from last year. Seniors Ann White and Amanda Philips earned All- Tournament team awards. Whited displayed superior volleyball athleticism and "heard" plenty of oohhs and ahhhs from the crowd. She simply had a knack for making the impossible look routine.

Loaded with freshmen and an outstanding rookie coach in Jenny Cooper, a former volleyball Olympiad and ISD standout, the future looks bright for the team and clearly they have an appointment with success.

The Lady Hoosiers volleyball team whole heartily wants to thank all the parents, friends, and fans, as well as the administrative team at ISD, for their support in the road trip to Maryland.

September 24: Edinburgh

September 23: Northwest

At Northwest, the Lady Hoosiers got off to a shaky start but managed to finish off the Pioneers in straight sets, 25-20, 25-3, and 25-7.  Seniors Amanda Phillips and Ann Whited fused the offense with 19 attacks and 10 kills.  Both players also connected for 6 serving aces.   Freshman, Hillary Peters stepped up with 7 attacks and 1 kill.  Teammate, Traci-Ann Hoglind accumulated 16 assists and 4 serving aces.

September 18: Park Tudor

Senior, Ann Whited, led the Ladies Hoosiers volleyball team with 18 attacks, 4 kills, and 6 digs in the home lost to Park Tudor (11-25, 8-25, and 8-25).  Freshman, Traci-Ann Hoglind tallied 13 sets and 4 assists.

September 13(Homecoming): Baptist Academy

At ISD, the Lady Orioles volleyball team displayed a balanced attack and cruised to a 25-21, 25-14, and 25-12 victory over Baptist Academy at Homecoming early Saturday afternoon. Seniors, Ann Whited and Amanda Phillips combined for 34 attacks and 15 kills. Whited also had 12 serving aces. Freshman, Tiffany Hoglind had 23 sets and 10 assists and teammate Jenna Smith, also a freshman, had her best offensive showing of the year with 8 attacks, 4 kills, and 4 aces. Head coach, Jenny Cooper, made adjustments by tagging Kate Fetzer as a defensive specialist and passer. Fetzer responded with 5 digs and strengthened the team’s defense. The win Saturday evened their week at 2-2.

September 11: Sheridan

At Sheridan, the Lady Orioles volleyball team was handed their 2nd lost of the week (24-26, 6-25, 25-15, 19-25). The team started strong leading 16 to 8 in the first game before becoming complacent and lost their composure. Down 2-0 in the match, the Orioles managed to take the 3rd game but the Blackhawks’ serving was pivotal down the stretch. Freshman, Kate Fetzer, had 10 attacks and teammate, Traci Ann Hoglind, produced 17 assists. Senior, Ann Whited, compiled 35 attacks and 15 kills.

September 10: Covenant Christian

At Covenant Christian, the Lady Hoosiers volleyball team bowed down to a formidable opponent in straight sets (4-25, 15-25, 14-25). The team simply had no answers for the Warrior's height and experience. Senior, Ann Whited, racked up 25 attacks, 8 kills, and collected 6 digs. Freshman, Traci Ann Hoglind managed 18 sets and 6 assists and teammate Tiara Finch, a sophomore, chipped in with 6 service points and 2 aces.

September 9: Waldron

The Lady Hoosiers notched their 1st sweep of the season over visiting Waldron (25-19, 25-20, 25-20).  Senior, Ann Whited, led the offense with 14 kills and 4 aces.  Teammate Amanda Phillips, also a Senior, added 7 kills and 2 blocks.  Freshman, Traci Ann Hoglind, registered 26 sets and 15 assists.  The Lady Hoosiers combined for 30 kills and 11 aces and will attempt their upbeat performance on Wednesday evening at Covenant Christian.

Record: 2-6

September 2: Bethesda Christian

Varsity volleyball hosted Patriots from Bethesda Christian last Tuesday. There were a see-sawing battle between both teams as match went to 5 sets. We captured first set with solid play: 25 - 18. They rallied to win second set: 22-25. We returned the favor and grabbed third set: 25-20. We let the victory slipped out in final two sets: 24-26 and 6-15.          Record: 1-7.

August 28: Tech

August 26: North Decatur

North Decatur won in 4 sets: 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 17-25, 25-14). It was ISD's first home game and we played much better in 3rd set and gave them a good scare. Ann Whited led with 23 kills and Amanda Phillips contributed 11 kills and 2 blocks.

August 23: Whiteland Invitational

There were four schools competing at Whiteland Invitational:

ISD, Whiteland HS, Muncie Southside HS, and Westifield HS. They were big schools compared to ISD. We survivied those three matches by close scores, unfortunately we finished fourth place.

Our first match was with Whiteland HS and the scores were 18-25, 25-21, 14-25. We did led at the middle of the match, but we couldn't hold the lead at the end. Ann Whited made 11 kills along with Freshman Traci Ann's 17 assists overall. Traci also made 3 aces. Amanda Phillips made 9 kills. Freshman Kate Fetzer made her 4 best kills.

The next match was against Muncie Southside. The scores were 22-25 and 14-25. We lost even though we made most attempted hits (30) in 2 matches. The opponent kept on digging our spikes. Ann Whited made 4 kills, Amanda Phillips made 6 kills, and Traci Ann Hoglind made 13 assists.

The last match was with Westfield HS. They were the strongest team in invitational tournament. We lost by the scores of 19-25 and 8-25. We did not have much offense, as we were in defense most of time against their taller players. I considered this tourney as a great experience for our young girls.

August 21: Lapel

We visited Lapel for our 2nd game of the season. We definitely improved with more offense opportunities. Seniors Ann Whited made 10 kills and Amanda Phillips made 4 kills. The team made 10 aces. All I can say, we almost had them. The scores were close and we made more errors at end. The final scores were 18-25, 18-25, 19-25. Record 0 - 2.

August 19: Southwest

We lost to Southwestern 1-3. The scores were 25-21, 13-25, 15-25, 16-25. It was our first game along with three freshmen as starters and we made some kills and aces. Ann Whited made 6 kills and 6 aces, Amanda Phillips made 8 kills. Jenna Smith, Traci Ann, and Tiara Finch made 2 kills each. We won the first game with great ball control and couldn't continue in next 3 sets.   Coach, Jenny Cooper
